In their foundations annual letter Bill and Melinda Gates demonstrated a core element of leadership: inspiring hope. The letter challenged concepts that discouraged people from tackling the Foundation’s mission of addressing poverty worldwide. The core ideas were that past and current efforts are having an impressive impact in improving the quality of life and that these efforts show every sign of continued progress.
Hope and Worklife
The chart at the top of this page shows the importance of hope. The survey asked people whether they had hope for their careers. Their level of hope was closely tied to their trust in others. The graph shows that trust in managers, supervisors, colleagues, and staff members were all tied to the level of hope.
Hope is the foundation of an effective team and the result of working effectively with that team.
