An essential part of empowerment at work is simply having access to necessary resources. Some work requires access to the right equipment and other work requires access to the right space. But in an information/service economy a lot of work requires access to the right information, know-how, or expertise. Very often, those essential resources reside in the people at work.
A key outcome of the CREW intervention is improving civility and respect among coworkers makes people feel more empowered. It makes sense. Better working relationships allow people to share more openly with their colleagues. The more easily information and ability moves around members of a workgroup, the more effective the group becomes.
Important questions to consider about your workgroup:
- Do you feel confident about asking your colleagues for advice or assistance? Do you feel that way with anyone and everyone within your workgroup?
- Do you feel generous when others ask you for advice or assistance? Do you feel that way with anyone and everyone within your workgroup?
If the answer is a clear yes to these questions, you are fortunate indeed. To the extent that you have some reservations about seeking or giving assistance, your workgroup loses some of its potential for greatness.
